Guatemala is often called the Land of Eternal Spring due to its temperate climate, although its geography varies from volcanic mountains, to lush jungle, to coastal plains. Guatemala is home to modern day and ancient Mayan culture. Its current population includes people with European, Caribbean, African and Indigenous ancestry. While Spanish is the official language, 23 indigenous languages are spoken here.

The country's heritage provides a colorful backdrop of weavings, artesian wares and textiles still used across the countryside. The 1992 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Guatemalan Rigaberta Menchu Tum, who achieved acclaim in her struggle for civil rights for the Mayan people. A country who's history includes decades of civil war and military oppression, Guatemala has persevered, taking on the challenge to advance in today's global community. Children and adults alike should find this country's cultural display educational and vibrant.
